Will Emergency Alert Test Tone Signal Doom and Gloom?

Conspiracy theories about FEMA's Emergency Alert System to be broadcast Wednesday, October 4, 2023, are spreading like wildfire online. The test that will take place stateside will assess two alert systems: the emergency alert system (EAS) which plays on TV and radio, and the wireless emergency alert (WEA) which will play on mobile devices.

The rumored conspiracies based on the test tone range from 5G activation that will trigger harm in anybody who's received the COVID jab to a full-out zombie apocalypse. On Wednesday, the alert will be broadcast on cellphone towers for approximately 30 minutes. It's the lengthy time of the tone that is further fuelling the doom and gloom rumors.

If you believe DIY tik-tok influencers you may want to wrap your cell phone in tinfoil or just shut your mobile devices off altogether and while you're at it, stay away from any device that can emit a broadcast signal.

Canadians will also receive emergency alerts on their cell phones on Wednesday, October 4th, 2023. The Canada-wide test of the national emergency alert system is scheduled to take place at 1:55 p.m. in most places and 12:55 p.m. in Ontario.

The test will be broadcast over television, radio, and compatible wireless devices, including cell phones. The Alert Ready system is used across the country to broadcast warnings on radio and television stations, as well as compatible wireless devices.

To receive alerts, mobile phones must be turned on, be connected to a cellular network, and have updated software.

The test involves an emergency tone and a message indicating no action from the public is required.
