Damp Conditions Bring Overland Flood Warnings For Southern Manitoba
Many parts of Manitoba can expect a significant amount of rain this weekend as a low-pressure system is making its way across the prairies. The high rain totals will be coupled with strong winds which have prompted warnings for floods and potential ice pile up.
According to the Weather Network, forecasters are tracking a low-pressure system out of North Dakota that may produce freezing rain in some areas of central and southern Manitoba and snow in the northern regions. Some areas will see 30 to 60 mm of rain heading into the weekend. Yet another system will target the flooded region with more rain later in the week and more precipitation is expected later next week towards the long weekend.
The rainfall has led to widespread overland flood warnings and watches across Manitoba. In addition to the showers, the system will also bring gusty winds and snow as it climbs north. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
An overland flood warning was issued for a portion of southwest Manitoba and the southeast corner of the province and an overland flood watch for all of southern and central Manitoba remains in effect. The wave of rainfall is hitting areas that were already dealing with flood emergencies.
As if the unusually moist conditions weren't bad enough, strong winds gusting as high as 80 km/h will be possible Friday for southern Manitoba according to the Weather Network. Any water levels close to cresting could get pushed over the edge due to the strong winds.
According to Manitoba's hydrologic forecast centre, with strong winds in the forecast, there is a high risk of ice piling up on the east shore of Lake Manitoba, Twin Lakes Beach and Lundar Beach areas. Residents are advised to remain vigilant & to take necessary precautions. From Friday night into Saturday morning, moderate snow and freezing rain will target far northern Manitoba, with 5-15 cm of local snow.
Winds will remain gusty throughout the day on Saturday, with single-digit daytime highs forecast for much of Manitoba as cooler air gets wrapped in behind the system.
