Single-Use Plastics Ban Begins Today

You are about to begin seeing fewer and fewer single-use plastics around and it won’t just be at restaurants. If you use red solo cups and or plastic utensils, you’ll soon be hard pressed to find any. In short, single-use plastics are about to become scarce.

Starting today (Tuesday, December 20, 2022), Canada will ban the manufacture and import for sale of single-use plastics. The move is in efforts to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Stated in a news release published by the federal government on June 20, 2022, the ban covers single-use plastics which include checkout bags, cutlery, food service ware, ring carriers, stir sticks and straws.

While the ban on the manufacturing and importing of these items comes into effect today, the sale of the aforementioned single-use plastic items will be allowed until December 2023 to allow restaurants and retailers in Canada enough time to transition. Once businesses have depleted their stock, these items will be prohibited altogether, according to the government's website.
