Pivotal Point For Park Community Centre

The Park Community Centre Saga Continues

During the last city council meeting the situation with The Park Community Centre went from plight to pivotal. As community members of ward 2 packed the chambers in the upper level of City Hall, councillors took turns sounding off on what could and or, should happen with the hall located near the heart of the city. It was at times a tense situation as many area residents hold the venue near and dear to their hearts and would hate to see it removed from the landscape of Brandon’s core area. The consensus from residents in the general area of The Park is to have it rebuilt.

The future of the Park Community Centre was uncertain at the time of that council meeting due to a shortage of funds for the proposed rebuild of the venue. In fact, $300,000 was the amount the city’s budget fell short for allocating funds to such a project. The lowest bid for the project was 1.5 million dollars which was submitted by a local company. Due to the overwhelming grassroots support, city council decided to revisit things and come up with a plan to repurpose the venue as a multi-faceted facility.

In this segment of “Your Town Today, In Conversation With…” host Frank McGwire chats with Ward 2 councillor Kris Desjarlais to get an update on the situation just prior to tonight’s (Monday, April 3, 2023) city council meeting. Desjarlais addresses everything from logistics of a rebuild to repurpose the facility and even comments on the idea that council may have a hidden agenda that would demolish the facility in favor of green space.
