Man Arrested Following Hammer Attack

Aggravated Assault

 

On 2023-11-13, at approximately 1:15 pm, the Brandon Police Service received a report from the 800 block of 15th Street that a suspect was attacking people with a hammer.  A description of the suspect was provided by witnesses on the scene, and officers subsequently located the accused a short distance from the area. 

 

While on the scene, 911 received a second call of a possible house fire on the same block.  Brandon Fire (BFES) attended the home and made entry after witnesses indicated that a victim of the hammer attack was potentially still inside the building. 

 

An adult male was pulled from the burning house by BFES.  The patient was found to have severe trauma to his head from multiple hammer strikes and was transported to the BRHC before being airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg.  Investigation resulted in learning that the initial fire to the home was deliberately set using accelerants.  A canister of accelerant and the weapon used during the assault were recovered by police at the scene of the fire. 

 

A second adult male victim was found to have been struck in the head with a hammer by the suspect, however, sustained minor injuries to the top of his head.  The suspect and the victims are known to each other and the most recent medical condition of the victim transported to HSC is listed as “critical but stable”. 

 

A 32-year-old male has been lodged at BPS to appear for court 2023-11-14, for the charges of Aggravated Assault, Assault with a Weapon, and Arson with Disregard for Human Life.

 


 

Breach of Peace

On the afternoon of 2023-11-13, police attended to a residence on Alaska Bay after receiving numerous calls of an male that was causing a disturbance.  To prevent a continuation of disruptive behavior, the 38-year-old male was lodged at BPS till morning.

 


 

Utter Forged Document

On the afternoon of 2023-11-13, police received a report from a Brandon business that an individual had previously attended the location with a counterfeit cheque.  The 51-year-old male suspect has been arrested and released with conditions to appear in court 2024-01-18 for the charges of Utter Forged Document and False Pretences.

 


 

Warrant

On the evening of 2023-11-13, police attended to the 400 block of 8th Street for an unwanted male.  A check of police records revealed the 43-year-old male to have an outstanding warrant.  The male has been released with conditions to appear in court 2024-01-08.

 


 

Public Mischief/FTC Release Order

On 2023-11-14, police conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle in the 900 block of Pacific Avenue.  The operator initially provided police with a false name, and revealed that the individual is bound by a court ordered curfew which he was in violation.  The 34-year-old male has been lodged at BPS to appear for court 2023-11-14, for the charges of Public Mischief and FTC Release Order.

 


 

Theft Under $5000/FTC Release Order

On the morning of 2023-11-13, police attended to a business in the 3400 block of Victoria Avenue after staff made a report that a male was stealing merchandise.  The 29-year-old male was also determined to not be abiding by a condition of his release order.  The accused has been lodged at BPS to appear in court 2023-11-14 for the charges of Theft Under $5000 and Failure to Comply with Release Order.
