Leading German vocal ensemble Calmus brings curtain down on pro series season

BRANDON – Brandon University’s (BU’s) School of Music will conclude its 2022-23 pro series concert season by welcoming one of Germany’s most successful vocal groups.

The Calmus Ensemble will perform at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, on Tuesday, April 18, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Calmus is influenced by the rich tradition of music in their home city of Leipzig, while integrating this with modern music as well. In addition to music influenced by Renaissance, Baroque and Romantic periods, the quintet’s remarkably varied repertoire also includes pop, folk and jazz.

“We’ve enjoyed an incredible year of pro series performances, and welcoming Calmus is the perfect way to cap off the season and bring us into spring,” said Greg Gatien, Dean of Music at BU. “Calmus is an internationally acclaimed group that is known for their dynamic and joyful performances.”

Consisting of Elisabeth Mücksch, soprano; Maria Kalmbach, alto; Friedrich Bracks, tenor; Jonathan Saretz, baritone; and Michael B. Gernert, bass, Calmus typically performs 50 to 60 concerts per year throughout Europe and North America. The group has recorded more than 20 albums and been the recipient of several awards internationally, including best choral recording from the OPUS KLASSIC German classical music prizes in 2019.

“Calmus is a wonderfully talented ensemble that wows audiences wherever they go,” Gatien said. “We’re thrilled to be able to see them right here at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, and local music lovers are in for a real treat.”

Tickets for Calmus, on Tuesday, April 18 at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, are available at the door, or from the School of Music Office.

The School of Music gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Manitoba Arts Council.
