Hip 2B Square is 1 Cool Show!

Fans of the iconic 80s band Huey Lewis & The News were treated to a blast from the past at the WMCA Thursday night. The musical ensemble that took the stage was comprised of Brandonites and people born and raised in various parts of Westman who currently call Brandon home.

The adrenalin kicked in right off the bat as the heartbeat sound effect from the 80s smash “Heart of Rock n’ Roll” while the band members took the stage to pick up or sit down at their instruments and proceeded to rock.

Early in the show lead vocalist Tim Epp (Huey) exclaimed, “We’re going to pack you all in a DeLoreon and take back in time!” The Hip 2 B Square show did just that! The show integrated photos and video clips from some of the more memorable 80s movies and music videos powered by a full sound system and light show. The 10-piece band is complete with a 4 part horn section, two guitarists, bass, drums, keyboards, and Huey all dressed in glittery stage outfits.

The crowd of nearly 300 were treated to about 20 songs from Huey Lewis & The News catalogue packed into two forty-five-minute sets. The band was crackin’ right from the start. Their cohesive musicianship was a testament to the many hours of practice and group rehearsals. Hip 2 Be Square’s stage show pays homage to one of the biggest bands ever to come out of the 80s. It was a treat from start to finish and many times throughout the show you’d swear it was Huey belting out the tune.

One aspect that helped the flow of the show was the banter between songs. Tim Epp (aka Huey) kept things light and bright with his commentary either sharing an informative fact of the song he was introducing or when he took turns introducing the band members. Sometimes Epp was quite comical in setting up the songs before the band proceeded to play. His playful repartee added to the show.

The highlight of the evening was an 8-minute rendition of "I Want a New Drug" which featured solo breaks from each player on the stage. This selection was one of several that had fans dancing in the aisles.

This performance isn’t going to be a one-and-done deal for Hip 2 Be Square. They announced to the crowd that they are available for future bookings. If you’re interested in having them perform at an upcoming event, contact Marc at 204-734-1544.
