Fire Prevention Week: Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape!

CITY OF BRANDON PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

October 6, 2022

Brandon, MB – As we approach Fire Prevention Week 2022 (October 9th through October 15th), Brandon Fire and Emergency Services would like to urge all residents to take this year's theme to heart: "Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape!"

This year is the 100th Anniversary of Fire Prevention Week. Recognized across North America each year, Fire Prevention Week campaigns work to educate people about the simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

Safety Tips:

·       Make a home fire escape plan that includes two ways out of every room. Make sure everyone in your home is part of the plan.

·       Make an outside meeting place that is a safe distance from your home

·       Ensure all smoke alarms in your home are working

·       If the smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay out

·       Call 9-1-1 from outside your home

Fire Prevention Week is a fun time with activities planned and helpful tips and reminders. It is good to be fire safe to prevent fires and prepare just in case a fire does occur. However, we need to remember that fire can be very dangerous.

During Fire Prevention Week in Brandon, the public is invited to stop by BFES's "Fire Safety Day" public display at Home Depot (801 18th Street N.) A pair of popular events for school-aged children – Fire Chief for a Day and Firefighter Celebrity Olympics – are also on tap through the week.
