Riverbank Discovery Centre's Canoe/Kayak Dock Open To Public

The wait is finally over for canoe and kayak enthusiasts in Westman who want a new facility to utilize. The long-awaited Kayak/Canoe launch planned for the Riverbank Discovery Centre in Brandon is ready to use as of today!

General Manager of the Discovery Centre, James Montgomery, says the plan has been established for quite a while now. Still, they needed to wait for water levels on the Assiniboine River to go down.

Montgomery says, "It's available for all canoe and kayakers to use and enjoy." A trail will lead from south of the Discovery Centre, down a little switch-back trail, to an existing platform reaching out into the Assiniboine River. The kayak dock is built off the platform extending about 100 feet into the river.

The cost of the project amounts to $179,000. Funds were procured through federal grants, a Brandon Area Community Foundation grant, and cost input by the City of Brandon.

The launch site is a protected area, designed for smaller watercraft, and the Discovery Centre will have kayaks, a canoe, paddles, and life jackets to rent by the hour.
