Social raises more than $17,000 for cancer care centre

A fundraising social earlier this year raised a whopping $17,308.98, which is being donated to help cancer patients at the Western Manitoba Cancer Centre.

The cheekily named ‘Kick Cancer’s A$$’ was held in January at the Victoria Inn and was a tremendous success, thanks to strong community support, amazing donations from many local business and organizations, and a ticket sellout. The social nearly doubled its $10,000 fundraising goal.

The money was donated to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation and is earmarked to fund much-needed equipment at the Western Manitoba Cancer Centre, such as a vein finder or a ceiling lift that would greatly improve the care for those fighting cancer.

Organized by three-time cancer survivor Darlene Paquette and a team of friends, the social was originally inspired by plans to host a 50-year “cancerversary” marking five decades of Paquette being cancer-free, after surviving kidney cancer at the age of six. That event was scheduled for early 2020, but plans were derailed by pandemic-related restrictions on in-person events. Then, plans were derailed again as Paquette fought and beat cancer twice more over the past five years.

The organization committee thanks everyone who supported the event.
