ZDZ media artist Mitchell Makoons – an Ojibway-Métis Roots and Rock singer-songwriter from Brandon, Manitoba is excited to announce his latest release!

On March 17th, Mitchell released the music video to his new single "Green Eyed Lady" -- an acoustic country blues inspired song full of fun and energy. The video recorded at No Fun Club in Winnipeg, MB features local musician Caitlin Baker on the fiddle, and Matt Kozicki on the upright bass.

Mitchell Makoons (He/Him) first picked up a guitar at the age of seven. Deeply rooted in Métis culture and tradition, Mitchell's sound braids together his cultural heritage with Roots and Rock. He is inspired to share his music and the beauty of Métis culture on the world stage, and plans on touring internationally. In the past, Mitchell has been featured on the Indigenous Music series "Talking Stick" and as a showcasing artist at Folk Music Ontario and Manitoba Arts Network.

After his two confessional and heartfelt singles in 2022, Mitchell is back this year with more rhythm, spirit, and groove. "Green Eyed Lady" is an upbeat and light-hearted song about being a little too nervous to talk to a beautiful green-eyed lady. Instead of talking to her, it's much easier to write a song about her instead. (See the video embedded near the bottom of this article).

Getting To Know Mitchell Makoons

Mitchell Makoons (He/Him) is a Roots/Rock musician from Brandon, Manitoba. Mitchell started playing guitar at the age of seven to accompany his grandfather and brother playing Metis fiddle tunes.

Mitchell continues to be an active member of the Manitoba Metis community. The songs Mitchell writes incorporate traditional Ojibway music and culture with modern influences.

Mitchell Makoons was formerly known as Mitchell Mozdzen. In early 2021 he decided to change his stage name to something that nodded to his Ojibway heritage. Makoons is an Anishinaabemowin word that means “Little Bear or Bear Cub''. Since Mitchell Mozdzen’s spirit name is “Standing Strong Black Bear '' and he is only 5 feet 5 inches, this name is perfectly fitting.
