BRANDON – A Brandon University student who is also president of the Brandon University Students’ Union has been highlighted by the Manitoba Council for International Education (MCIE) as the province's Outstanding International Student for Universities in 2024.

Charles Adamu was in Winnipeg last week to be presented with the award by Minister Renée Cable during the International Education Week Awards at the Manitoba Legislative Building. Adamu was one of five students to be honoured, one each from different educational categories, including university, college, student supporter, language, and secondary.

“Living and learning in Manitoba, particularly in Brandon, has been an immensely positive experience for me,” said Adamu, who is from Kaduna State, Nigeria, and is in his third year of a Computer Science major at BU. “While I enjoyed learning back home, the environment here has allowed me to thrive even more. The small class sizes, supportive faculty, and the close-knit community have contributed greatly to my academic success and personal development.”

Adamu was nominated for the award by BU Dean of Students Katie Whelpton.

“Charles is an exceptional (4.18 gpa) student providing outstanding leadership as President of the Brandon University Students' Union. I have been at BU for 25 years and have never seen a student accomplish so many important student-centered initiatives in their first five months as President,” Whelpton said, listing the Campus Cupboard to address food insecurity, free menstrual products, and a mentorship program for International students as highlights.

“I have watched Charles give multiple presentations to staff, students and faculty on campus. He is a confident speaker and shares his journey to BU story with others,” she said. “His expression of all of the circumstances and life-hurdles that led him Canada, is truly inspirational.”

Adamu says that Brandon University always made him feel welcome.

“Leaving Nigeria for Canada was a major transition, but I am glad I chose Manitoba. Its diverse population has made me feel welcomed and valued,” he said. “As someone who deeply appreciates cultural richness, this inclusivity has enriched my experience.”
