BRANDON – Brandon University’s work to be more environmentally sustainable have been recognized by the City of Brandon with a Green Business Award. The awards recognize and celebrate organizations that have taken the initiative to employ efforts in sustainability, water conservation, and waste diversion efforts.

“I am extremely proud of our team for embracing environmentally sound practices and projects,” said Michael McCormick, Director of BU’s Physical Plant, which houses many of the environmental initiatives being recognized by the city. “It’s nice to know that BU’s blue and gold are so green.”

Brandon University was recognized for adopting green cleaning practices, switching to LED lighting, refurbishing sustainable gardens on campus, and reducing paper use through virtual meetings and electronic files.

The award was presented to BU earlier today as city representatives stopped by to share coffee at the Physical Plant.

McCormick noted that operating in an environmentally sustainable way also makes sense from a financial perspective.

“A lot of what we can do to be sustainable involves reducing waste. That means we’re being more efficient, which costs us less money,” he said, pointing to recent campus greenspace improvements like the Turtle Fire ceremonial firepit, which features grasses that require less watering. “Our next big project is moving to more centralized waste diversion and recycling collection, and we expect to recoup significant savings there as well.”

Michelle Augustyn, BU’s Safety & Health Advisor, and Al Puhach, Maintenance Supervisor, received the award on BU’s behalf.
