A panel of local and national experts say that the intersection of Lorne Avenue E and Park Street in Brandon, Manitoba, where Grant Hamilton was struck by a car in 2022 and subsequently lost his pinky finger, features design flaws that make it unsafe. The official report is attached.

The panellists recommend 5 immediate actions and several mid- and long-term changes that will make the intersection safer for users.
Recommendation #1 is to replace the intersection's yield signs with stop signs to calm vehicular traffic. Read more recommendations in the report.
These recommendations are the result of a Crash Analysis Studio, a new approach to addressing traffic crashes where community members convene to research and review the incident, looking not for driver or pedestrian error, but how street design caused the collision. This was the first such studio held in Canada at the time.
A recording of the Crash Analysis Studio is available here.
